Dear Parents and Guardians of Vic West Elementary Students,
A few families have approached us about their Kindergarten/Primary child wearing a mask at school. If you are going to send your child to school with masks, please be sure to equip your child with support to do so, namely:
a. practice putting on and taking masks off with clean hands, handling only the mask’s ear loops and *review this regularly*;
b. practice wearing a mask at home and/or in public;
c. make a plan with your child about their mask use (e.g. remove your mask for eating times after handwashing; keep your mask in its special spot inside your backpack during eating times and recess); and
d. explain why it is important for your child to not leave their mask out on their desk, on the floor, etc. and *review this regularly*.
Please note: We highly recommend that children who will be wearing masks have assigned spots in their backpacks (e.g. a particular pouch of their backpack). There should be a spot for clean masks and used masks. Please ensure that masks and any mask bags are clearly labeled with their name.
To clarify, health authorities require mask wearing for grade 4-12 students and recommend mask wearing for grades K-3. We are happy to support any children whose families would like them to wear a mask at school.

Our expectations for school remain the same – to be in accordance with the health and safety protocols from the Provincial Health Office. We are very grateful to be living and working in a community that is doing their part to keep everyone safe. Thank you for your support, patience and understanding; it is very much appreciated as these times continue to be unique and challenging in so many ways.
